Events featuring The Moorfields MDT project

The 1st World Glaucoma Day

This inaugural event was a joint initiative of the World Glaucoma Association and World Glaucoma Patient Association to raise global awareness of the disease.

Moorfields Eye Hospital response to World Glaucoma Day was to hold a glaucoma test session at The House of Commons to inform members of parliament (MPs) of the global challenge of glaucoma detection and the impact on their constituents. The event was organised by the RNIB, steered by Moorfields and supported by the International Glaucoma Association (IGA). The reception was hosted by John Baron MP (previous shadow health minister) and attended by Lord Heseltine.

Each MP was offered an on-site glaucoma test with a demonstration of three new technologies:

  • Test of Visual Field (The new Moorfields Motion Displacement Test, which runs on a laptop computer)
  • Optic nerve imaging (Heidelberg Retina Tomograph [HRT3])
  • Intraocular pressure measurement (Reichert Ocular Response Analyser [ORA])

These tests were selected to represent the three tests of field of vision, health of the optic nerve (nerve of sight) and eye pressure, which are recommended by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for the diagnosis of glaucoma.

The Moorfields Motion Displacement Test (MDT)The Moorfields Motion Displacement Test (MDT) is being developed by Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology since 1999. It is a new test of the field of vision. The advantages of the Moorfields MDT are that it runs on a standard laptop, potentially offering affordability and portability for case finding in the community. We are currently working in collaboration with City University to develop new, faster strategies to improve test efficiency.

The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph 3 (HRT3)The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph 3 (HRT3) is a portable laser scanner that obtains 3-dimensional images of the optic nerve head. Images taken with the HRT allow measurements of the nerve structure to be made. These measurements are compared to data from normal subjects for diagnosis of glaucoma. The measurements also allow for comparison of images of the same patient over time to monitor for stability or worsening.

The Ocular Response Analyser (ORA)The Ocular Response Analyser (ORA) provides a new method of measuring the pressure within the eye. High eye pressure is a risk factor for the development of glaucoma and accurate measurement is essential for both diagnosis and treatment. The ORA offers a new level of measurement precision by correcting for the bio-mechanical properties of the cornea.
