Mission Statement

The global estimate of glaucoma is in the region of 67 million people worldwide. Glaucoma is the commonest cause of irreversible blindness, but is treatable if detected early. At least 50% of all glaucoma sufferers are undiagnosed, with this figure reaching 90% in the developing world.

Diagnosis of glaucoma is made according to three signs:

  • The field of vision
  • The health of the optic nerve (nerve of sight)
  • The eye pressure

The vision of the Moorfields Motion Displacement Test (MDT) is to address the challenge of global glaucoma detection by providing a new test of the field of vision, with the following aims and objectives:

  • To develop a windows-based test for standard computer use.
  • The price to be low cost to give global affordability.
  • A laptop version to be available, giving portability for case-finding in the community.
  • • The test development to be optimised through translational university-led research.
