What is The Moorfields MDT?
The Moorfields Motion Displacement Test (MDT) is a new test of the field of vision that may be used for the detection of glaucoma. The test runs on a standard computer and has been developed by Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL since 1999.
How is the test done?
Each eye is tested separately. The patient is asked to look at a central spot on a computer screen and to press the computer mouse each time a line on the screen is seen to move (figure 1).

What are the advantages of The Moorfields MDT?
The advantage of The Moorfields MDT is that it runs on a standard laptop computer. This means that it may offer an affordable, portable method of detecting glaucoma in the community.
Where can I have the test done?
The Moorfields MDT is still under development and not yet available. The test is currently undergoing validation in an international study with the University of Toronto, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada and the Bietti Foundation in Rome.
What should I do if I would like a glaucoma test?
You should visit your Optometrist and ask for a glaucoma test. This will include a check of the optic nerve (nerve of sight) at the back of the eye, a test of your field of vision and measurement of your eye pressure. Your Optometrist will refer you to your Doctor or your local hospital if the results of these three tests suggest you have glaucoma.
